Enjoy Learning in Retirement

Bill Key, Chairman, Elmbridge U3A

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a world-wide organisation launched in the 70’s with the object of providing opportunities for learning in retirement. There are some 400 local U3As in the U.K. one of which is the Elmbridge U3A established in 1998.

The use of the word ‘university’ simply implies that members are keen to learn. The U3A does not grant degrees and there are not any hurdles to membership. The Elmbridge U3A is now 340 strong and runs some 40 Groups covering a wide range of subjects, some serious e.g. Philosophy, some frivolous e.g Scrabble, some entertaining e.g. Theatre visits.

The annual subscription is £8 and this entitles you to join as many groups as you like. Needless to say people willing to consider running a group are particularly welcome. Most Groups meet in the house of a member of the Group which provides a relaxed and informal atmosphere. If you would like to learn more about the Elmbridge U3A please phone our Membership Secretary, Dr. J.L.Martin on 020 8398 5161.
