Autumn 2001

Oxshott Probus Club

Bob Graham, Chairman, Oxshott Probus Club

Nearly 20 years ago there was no Probus Club in Oxshott or Cobham and the Oxshott Men’s Group was set up as a non-sectarian body to enable retired men to meet socially. Meetings have always been on the third Wednesday in the month (except August) at St. Andrew’s Church Hall in Oxshott at 10:30 for 11:00 am, and include a speaker who talks for about 40 minutes following with a ploughman’s lunch.

The first speaker in September 1981 was the distinguished local resident Sir Patrick Nairne on “Are We Over-Governed”. Since then, a wide variety of subjects has been covered including sport, music travel, diplomacy, archaeology, history, industry and aspects of the Second World War.

The advent of Probus Clubs in Cobham and Claygate has greatly broadened the opportunities for recently-retired men to meet together, and the Oxshott Men’s Group was no longer unique. In view of the fact that it was a Probus Club in all but name, members voted in February to become the Probus Club of Oxshott. The venue and frequency of meetings will continue as before; dates, speakers and topics for the remainder of 2001 are: November 21, Jimmy McMillan: “Scotland vs. England”; December 19, Ed Douglas: “BBC Southern Counties Radio”.

The present contact for guests and potential new members is the Chairman, Bob Graham (01372 843 045).
